I Hear Jasper Calling My Name (Continued) While taking pictures of the creek bottom and marveling at how much of the material was petrified wood, I also managed to catch a glimpse of the rare "White Crested Crick-Hopper". Although trying it's best to stay hidden, I still got this rare photographic proof of it's existence... Rob finally showed up about the time we were headed back to the trucks from the creek. Seems most everyone had at least one piece of palm wood. We met Rob coming down the hill. Like any good host and rock-hound, he had his nose to the ground all of the way. Because of this aspect of our affliction, he picked up a wonderful dart point within feet of a deer stand adjacent to the trace. The point was fashioned from petrified wood, and although it appeared the basal tang may be missing, it's thin style and symmetry were still something to admire in workmanship. It was the first point that Rob has ever found in that particular area. As it was getting late in the day. we made plans to meet for dinner around 7:00pm at the Catfish Barn just north of Jasper. We headed for the motel while Rob headed for home so we could all get cleaned up a bit before dinner. Over southern fried catfish fillets and hush puppies, baked potatoes and cole slaw, we planned the next day's activity. Rob brought some of his artifacts that he's found in the area, and also some of his own knapping work to show us. Rob does good work and utilizes the "Ishi-stick" method of knapping. After dinner we headed out once more to turn in for the night and get some rest. Next morning we hit the road bright and early, stopped long enough to grab a biscuit at BK, headed for the collecting area again. Rob was going to meet us there sometime before 8:00am. Since the day before the collecting was so good that I almost didn't have room for the ATVs on the trailer, I had to park them on top of the petrified wood we had collected. One was somewhat jammed in front of the big logs and not easy to get unloaded, so I opted to leave it on the trailer for the day. I was still able to unload the other one, and it's a good thing... Brandon was hollerin' on the 2-way that he had found a big log and needed help digging it out. He showed up on the ATV to get more digging tools. Rob, David, and Fritz were all off in Tiger Creek getting wet looking for palm wood, and I was busy digging out several hundred pounds of wood around where I parked the trailer...
